Friday WFH Policy Expected to Cut Fuel Subsidy Costs

Jakarta Council (DPRD) Commission A Member Kevin Wu expected the work from home (WFH) policy for civil servants (ASN) within the Jakarta Provincial Government could help reduce fuel subsidies.

"The main goal is to reduce fuel consumption,"

According to him, the policy follows up on a central government appeal to cut energy consumption, particularly from daily transportation activities.

"I have raised my views on the Friday WFH policy several times. The main goal is to reduce fuel consumption from daily activities," he said on Monday (4/6).

He added that the policy should be evaluated regularly to ensure its effectiveness. Several experts, he noted, believe that implementing WFH every Friday may not necessarily deliver a significant impact.

"We certainly support the central government's program. However, there must be an evaluation. Within the next two months, we need to assess whether this policy can truly reduce fuel subsidies," he emphasized.

Kevin also reiterated his proposal to consider implementing WFH on Wednesdays instead of Fridays, to avoid potential misuse of the policy as a way to extend long weekends.

"We must ensure this WFH policy is not misused as an extended holiday. With improved infrastructure, people can already travel out of town with just two days off—let alone with WFH every Friday," he explained.

He emphasized that Commission A will continue to monitor the implementation of the policy, including attendance levels of civil servants across agencies.

"We will monitor it, including within the DPRD Secretariat, looking at the figures and its impact. This is still in the early stages, so we need to observe how it develops," Kevin said.
